He is an award winning film and theater critic who, since 2000, has been writing a weekly column in The Spectrum daily newspaper in southern Utah as well as serving as a contributing editor of “The Independent,” a monthly entertainment magazine. It may have some lush visuals, but this cold, poorly structured wannabe epic rarely elicits anything more than tepid admiration for its characters. And the time-toggling flashbacks feel gimmicky rather than purposeful. Like 1996’s “The English Patient” its Oscar nom is befuddling.
