Before the Rains

Superb storytelling makes up for lack of star power

What this lush, beautifully shot film lacks in star power or even originality it makes up for in superb storytelling. A verdant, 1937 southern India is the backdrop for a tale of forbidden love, customs, rising nationalism and epic tragedy-exuding Merchant Ivory quality in every frame.

Grade: B
Rated PG-13 for violent content and a scene of sexuality.
